Nautical Know How with One Artsy Mama

We're thrilled to introduce a very special guest blogger Amy Latta from One Artsy Mama! Her blog is a inspiration to all with a goal of "proving that none of us are perfect; we can be creative and awesome while still being totally human and making mistakes." Read more about DIY projects, jewelry crafting, kids crafts, recipes and more on her blog. Thank you, Amy, for sharing your talents with us!
I don’t know about you, but I absolutely love all things nautical!  Anything that reminds me of the beach or the ocean is fantastic in my book.  I enjoy having nautical décor in my home all year round, but particularly during the summer months I’m always trying to come up with fun new things I can display to make me think of the beach even when I’m not there.  Recently, I came up with this simple, quick, and inexpensive Framed Nautical Art using Stencil1 images and FolkArt paints.  Here’s how I made it:

Materials:
- FolkArt Multi-Surface Paint: Wicker White and Real Brown
- 5x7 and 3x5 frames from Goodwill
- OlyFun fabric: blue and white
- Sponge brush
- Scissors
- Burlap Mesh

Step 1: Cut a piece of fabric the same size as your frame.  Tape the stencil in place so it doesn’t move while you’re working.

Step 2: Carefully use a sponge brush to apply paint to the stencil.  A little bit goes a long way.  I like to tap my brush on scrap paper or another surface to get any excess off before I apply it to the stenciled area.  If you have too much paint, it will bleed underneath the stencil and give you a fuzzy image.

Step 3: Carefully remove the tape and stencil.  Once the paint is dry, place the piece in your frame.  I chose to not replace the glass because I want to be able to see the texture of the fabric and the details of the stencil and not have to worry about a reflection.  Plus, now it’s unbreakable, which is always helpful when there are little people around the house.

I did the same steps for the second image and just added my mesh burlap across the top when I placed everything in the frame.  Again, I opted not to use the glass from the frame because I love the mixed media effect of the textures.

Once the frames are finished, they’re ready to display!

This project only took me about 10-15 minutes to create, and it was very inexpensive too, which is always a plus.  Now, I have a fun reminder of the ocean to look at whenever I want…and you can too!  I hope you enjoyed the project, and I would love for you to stop by One Artsy Mama to check out some of the other things my Little Crafter and I have been up to lately.  You can also find us on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, and Instagram for inspiration and artsy fun!
